    In Lesson 3, we learned about walking in humility. Humility helps us depend on God, serve others, remain teachable, and resist pride.

    In this lesson, we focus on loving like Christ. Love is one of the clearest marks of true discipleship. Jesus did not say people would know His disciples by their knowledge alone, their religious activity alone, or their outward appearance alone. He said they would know His disciples by their love.

    Christlike love is not shallow, selfish, or based only on emotion. It is a love shaped by God’s character, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and expressed through daily choices.

    Core Teaching

    Love is at the center of Christian character. Jesus commanded His disciples to love one another as He loved them. This means Christ Himself is the standard for how believers are called to love.

    John 13:34 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you.” Jesus did not call His followers to love according to convenience, preference, personality, or emotion. He called them to love according to His example.

    Christlike love is sacrificial. Jesus loved by serving, giving, forgiving, correcting, comforting, and laying down His life. His love was not selfish. It did not seek its own glory. It moved toward people with compassion, truth, mercy, and obedience to the Father.

    John 13:35 teaches that love is a visible mark of discipleship. Jesus said, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” This means our love becomes a testimony. The way we treat people can either reflect Christ or misrepresent Him.

    First Corinthians 13 gives a clear picture of what love looks like in practice. Love suffers long and is kind. This means love is patient. It does not quickly give up on people. It is willing to endure difficulty with grace and respond with kindness.

    Love does not envy. It does not become bitter when others are blessed, noticed, promoted, or celebrated. Christlike love can rejoice when God is working in someone else’s life.

    Love does not parade itself and is not puffed up. This means love is not proud, boastful, or self-centered. True love does not use others as a stage for personal attention. It seeks to honor God and serve people sincerely.

    Love does not behave rudely and does not seek its own. This reminds us that love affects our tone, our words, our attitude, and our treatment of others. Love does not always demand its own way. It considers others with humility and care.

    Love is not easily provoked and thinks no evil. This tells us that love is not quick to assume the worst, easily offended, or controlled by resentment.

    First John 4:7 teaches that love comes from God. We cannot love like Christ in our own strength alone. Human love can become tired, conditional, selective, or self-protective. But God’s love works in us by His Spirit and teaches us to love beyond our natural ability.

    Romans 12:10 tells believers to be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love and to honor one another. Christlike love is practical. It shows up in encouragement, patience, forgiveness, generosity, service, listening, compassion, and honor.

    Loving like Christ does not mean approving of everything people do. Jesus loved with grace and truth. He showed mercy to sinners, but He also called people to repentance. Christlike love does not compromise truth, but it speaks truth with humility and compassion.

    Love is one of the strongest evidences that God is shaping our character. When we grow in love, we begin to reflect the heart of Christ more clearly in our homes, churches, friendships, workplaces, ministries, and communities.

    Personal Application

    Begin by asking God to show you how well your love reflects Christ. Are you patient with difficult people? Are you kind when you feel inconvenienced? Are you able to rejoice when others are blessed? Are you willing to forgive, serve, listen, and honor others?

    Christlike love is often tested in everyday relationships. It is tested when someone disappoints you, misunderstands you, irritates you, disagrees with you, or needs something from you when you are tired.

    Loving like Christ does not mean you never set boundaries. Love can be kind and wise at the same time. Love can forgive while still walking in discernment. Love can speak truth while still showing humility. Love can serve others without enabling what dishonors God.

    Ask the Holy Spirit to help you love beyond emotion and convenience. Ask Him to help you love in a way that reflects Jesus.

    Christlike love is not merely something you feel. It is something you practice through patience, humility, truth, forgiveness, compassion, and service.

    • Honor others: Look for ways to show respect, encouragement, and appreciation.
    • Speak truth with grace: Do not avoid truth, but speak it with humility and love.
    • Pray for difficult people: Ask God to bless, heal, convict, and guide them.

    Obedience is a response of love, trust, and surrender to God. True discipleship is not only hearing God’s Word, but living it out daily.

    In Level 4, we begin learning how to walk out our faith through daily obedience and Christlike character. After building a foundation of faith, developing spiritual habits, and renewing the mind, the next step is learning how to live what God has been teaching us.

    Obedience is one of the clearest marks of discipleship. It is not about earning God’s love or trying to appear religious. Obedience is the fruit of a heart that loves God, trusts His wisdom, and surrenders to His will.

    Faith is meant to be lived. A believer who hears God’s Word but refuses to obey it remains spiritually immature. But when we respond to God’s Word with obedience, our lives begin to reflect the character and lordship of Christ.

    Core Teaching

    Obedience is central to the Christian life. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” This shows us that obedience flows from love. God is not looking for empty religious performance. He desires a heart that loves Him enough to follow Him.

    Many people misunderstand obedience. Some see it as legalism, pressure, or merely following rules. But biblical obedience is relational. It is the response of a heart that trusts God’s character and believes His ways are good.

    Obedience does not earn salvation. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. However, obedience is one of the evidences that faith is alive and growing. When a person truly trusts God, that trust begins to show in how they live.

    James 1:22 warns believers to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. It is possible to hear Scripture, agree with Scripture, and even enjoy Scripture, yet still not apply it. But spiritual growth requires more than information. It requires application.

    Hearing without obeying can create self-deception. A person may think they are growing because they are receiving truth, but if that truth is not being practiced, the heart remains unchanged in important areas. Obedience is where truth becomes visible.

    Jesus asked in Luke 6:46, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” This is a serious question. Calling Jesus Lord means recognizing His authority. If He is Lord, then His Word must guide our choices, priorities, relationships, habits, and responses.

    Obedience is not always easy. Sometimes God asks us to forgive when we would rather hold on to offense. Sometimes He calls us to tell the truth when dishonesty feels easier. Sometimes He leads us to serve, give, wait, apologize, repent, or walk away from something that is pulling us away from Him.

    Yet 1 John 5:3 reminds us that God’s commandments are not burdensome. This does not mean obedience never requires sacrifice. It means God’s commands are not meant to crush us. They are given from His love, wisdom, and holiness. His commands protect us, guide us, mature us, and keep us walking in fellowship with Him.

    Obedience also deepens trust. Each time we obey God, we learn more of His faithfulness. We begin to see that His way is better than our own. We begin to recognize that surrender is not loss; surrender is the pathway to spiritual life, freedom, and maturity.

    Living a life of obedience is a daily decision. It is not only about major spiritual moments. It includes small choices: choosing patience, speaking truth, praying instead of worrying, forgiving instead of retaliating, serving instead of seeking attention, and obeying the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

    The goal is not perfection. The goal is a surrendered heart that keeps saying yes to God.

    Begin by asking God where He is calling you to obey. Is there a command you have been delaying? A conviction you have ignored? A habit He has been asking you to surrender? A relationship where He is calling you to forgive, apologize, or act with love?

    Obedience often begins with one clear step. God may not show you everything at once, but He will often make the next step clear. The question is whether you are willing to trust Him enough to take that step.

    When God has clearly spoken through His Word or convicted your heart by His Spirit, the faithful response is to obey. Waiting can sometimes be wisdom, but avoiding obedience can become resistance.

    In Lesson 6, we learned about walking by faith. Faith is more than belief in our hearts; it is trust that leads to action. One of the ways faith becomes visible is through obedience.

    Obeying God daily means learning to follow Him in both large and small areas of life. It means allowing His Word to shape our decisions, attitudes, relationships, habits, speech, priorities, and responses.

    Discipleship is not only about knowing what Jesus taught. It is about surrendering our lives and following Him.

    Core Teaching

    Obedience is an essential part of spiritual growth. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” This shows us that obedience is not meant to be cold religious duty. Biblical obedience flows from your love for Christ.

    Many people want the comfort of God’s promises without letting go of their desires, fears, and control and placing them in His hands. But Jesus never called people merely to admire Him. He called people to follow Him. Following Jesus means His Word becomes the authority over our lives.

    James 1:22 warns believers not to be hearers of the Word only, but doers. It is possible to hear sermons, read devotionals, study Scripture, and still resist obedience. Spiritual maturity is not measured only by how much we know, but by how faithfully we respond to what God has revealed.

    Obedience does not mean perfection. Every believer is still growing. We will need grace, correction, repentance, and forgiveness along the way. But a growing disciple has a heart that desires to please God and respond to Him faithfully.

    Luke 6:46 gives a direct challenge from Jesus: “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” To call Jesus Lord means we recognize His authority. His instructions are not suggestions to consider only when convenient; they are truth to follow.

    Daily obedience often happens in ordinary places. It happens when we choose honesty instead of deception, forgiveness instead of bitterness, patience instead of anger, purity instead of compromise, generosity instead of selfishness, and faith instead of fear.

    Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to acknowledge God in all our ways. That means we invite God into every area of life, not just church-related matters. We acknowledge Him in our decisions, relationships, finances, work, words, thoughts, and plans.

    First John 5:3 teaches that God’s commandments are not burdensome. This does not mean obedience is always easy. It means God’s commands are not meant to harm us or hold us back. They are given by a loving Father who knows what leads to life, freedom, wisdom, and spiritual health.

    The more we obey God, the more we learn that His ways are good. Obedience protects us, strengthens us, matures us, and helps us become more like Christ.

    Obedience becomes real when God’s Word touches the specific areas of our lives. It is not enough to agree with Scripture in general. We must ask, “Lord, what are You asking me to do with what You have shown me?”

    Sometimes obedience is immediate and clear. God may be calling you to forgive someone, apologize, stop a harmful habit, begin a spiritual discipline, speak truth, serve someone, or make a decision that honors Him.

    Other times obedience requires patience. You may need to keep doing the right thing even when you do not see quick results. Faithful obedience often grows through repeated daily choices.

    One of the greatest obstacles to obedience is delayed surrender. We may know what God is asking, but hesitate because of fear, pride, comfort, or personal desire. This is why obedience requires trust. We obey because we believe God’s way is better than our own.

    Obedience is not about earning God’s love. It is a response to the love and grace we have already received in Christ.

    When you apply God’s Word to your daily life, your actions begin to reflect His truth. Obedience is a key part of following Christ.

    Walk in Love and Grace
