Level 3: Be Transformed — Renewing the Mind
Lesson 9: Thinking Like a New Creation
In Christ, you are not defined by your past, your failures, your old patterns, or the labels others placed on you. God calls you to think according to your new identity in Christ.
Focus
Embracing your identity in Christ and refusing old patterns of thinking.
In Lesson 8, we learned about choosing peace over anxiety. We saw that God invites us to bring every concern to Him through prayer and receive the peace of Christ that guards our hearts and minds.
In this lesson, we focus on thinking like a new creation. One of the most important parts of renewing the mind is learning to think according to who God says you are in Christ.
Many believers love God, but still think from old identities, old wounds, old failures, old labels, or old patterns. But Scripture teaches that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. That truth must shape the way we see ourselves, our future, and our walk with God.
Key Scriptures
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10, NKJV
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.”
Colossians 3:1, NKJV
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2, NKJV
“For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Colossians 3:3, NKJV
Core Teaching
One of the greatest truths of the Christian life is that believers are made new in Christ. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” This is not merely a motivational statement. It is a spiritual reality.
When a person places faith in Jesus Christ, they are not simply improved or cleaned up outwardly. They are made new. The old life no longer has the final word. The past no longer has the authority to define them. Sin, shame, failure, fear, and old labels are not greater than the finished work of Christ.
However, many believers still struggle to think like new creations. They may be saved, forgiven, and loved by God, yet their minds continue to rehearse old beliefs: “I will never change.” “I am not enough.” “God cannot use me.” “My past defines me.” “I am still the same person I used to be.”
Renewing the mind involves learning to reject thoughts that belong to the old life and receive thoughts that agree with your new identity in Christ. You cannot walk fully in new life while continually agreeing with old lies.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” This means your life has value, purpose, and design in God. You are not an accident. You are not spiritually useless. You are God’s workmanship.
The word “workmanship” reminds us that God is actively working in His people. He is shaping, restoring, teaching, correcting, strengthening, and preparing us to walk in what He has called us to do.
Your identity is not based on your strongest emotion, your worst mistake, your current struggle, or the opinion of others. Your identity is rooted in Christ. You belong to Him. You are being formed by Him. You are called to walk with Him.
Colossians 3:1–3 teaches believers to seek the things above and set their minds on things above. This means new creations must learn to think from a heavenly perspective. We no longer define life only by earthly values, temporary pressures, cultural labels, or personal failures.
To set your mind on things above means to let Christ shape your focus. It means remembering that your life is hidden with Christ in God. Your deepest identity is secure in Him.
Old patterns of thinking often return when life becomes difficult. Pressure may tempt you to think like the old person. Failure may tempt you to return to shame. Conflict may tempt you to react from pride, fear, or anger. Delay may tempt you to believe God has forgotten you.
But thinking like a new creation means asking, “What is true because I am in Christ?” Instead of asking, “What does my past say?” ask, “What does God’s Word say?” Instead of asking, “What do I feel right now?” ask, “What is true in Christ?”
This does not mean you deny struggles. It means you refuse to let struggles define your identity. You may still be growing, learning, healing, and overcoming, but you are doing so as someone who belongs to Christ.
The Christian life is a process of learning to live outwardly from what God has made true inwardly. As your mind is renewed, you begin to think, speak, decide, and respond more like someone who has been made new.
Personal Application
Take time to notice the way you speak to yourself internally. Do your thoughts agree with your identity in Christ, or do they keep you tied to the old life?
Some believers repeatedly call themselves by names God has not given them. They say, “I am a failure,” “I am broken,” “I am not useful,” “I always mess up,” or “I will never grow.” But renewed thinking requires us to stop agreeing with labels that contradict the Gospel.
Instead, begin replacing those thoughts with biblical truth. In Christ, you are forgiven. In Christ, you are made new. In Christ, you are God’s workmanship. In Christ, you have purpose. In Christ, you are still growing by grace.
Remember This Truth
Your past may explain part of your story, but it does not define your identity. In Christ, you are a new creation.
A Simple Pattern for Thinking Like a New Creation
Use this pattern when old thoughts, labels, or beliefs try to define you.
The N.E.W. Pattern
- Name the old thought: Identify the belief, label, or pattern that does not agree with your identity in Christ.
- Exchange it for truth: Find a Scripture that declares what is true because of Jesus.
- Walk in agreement: Take one step that reflects who God says you are, not who the old thought says you are.
Replacing Old Identity with New Creation Truth
Here are examples of how to replace old patterns of thinking with truth from God’s Word.
Old Thought and New Truth
-
Old thought: “I am defined by my past.”
New creation truth: “In Christ, old things have passed away and all things have become new.” -
Old thought: “God cannot use me.”
New creation truth: “I am His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” -
Old thought: “I will never change.”
New creation truth: “God is still working in me and transforming me by His Spirit.” -
Old thought: “My struggle is my identity.”
New creation truth: “My life is hidden with Christ in God.” -
Old thought: “I am spiritually worthless.”
New creation truth: “I belong to Christ, and my life has purpose in Him.”
New Creation Mindset Check
Use these questions to examine whether your thoughts are agreeing with your identity in Christ.
Ask Yourself:
- What old label have I continued to believe about myself?
- Does that label agree with what God says about me in Christ?
- What part of my past have I allowed to define my identity?
- What Scripture speaks truth over that area?
- How would I think differently today if I truly believed I am a new creation?
- What step of obedience reflects my new life in Christ?
Bible Reflection Questions
- What does 2 Corinthians 5:17 teach you about who you are in Christ?
- What old thought or label have you struggled to let go of?
- How does Ephesians 2:10 help you understand your purpose?
- What does Colossians 3:1–3 teach you about where to set your mind?
- What is one new creation truth you need to meditate on this week?
Action Step
Identify one old label, belief, or thought pattern that has been shaping the way you see yourself. Replace it with a Scripture that speaks to your identity in Christ.
Complete these statements:
- One old thought or label I need to reject is: __________________________
- This thought has affected me by: __________________________
- God’s Word says I am: __________________________
- One Scripture I will meditate on is: __________________________
- One step I will take as a new creation is: __________________________
This week, speak that Scripture over your life each day and ask God to help you think, speak, and respond from your identity in Christ.
Prayer
Father, thank You that in Christ I am a new creation. Help me stop agreeing with old labels, old shame, and old patterns that do not reflect who You say I am. Renew my mind and teach me to think according to Your Word. Remind me that I am Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Help me set my mind on things above and walk in the truth of my identity in Christ. In Jesus name, Amen.
