Walk It Out — Obedience and Character

Lesson 7: Walking in Integrity

In a world that often rewards compromise, God calls His people to a higher standard: integrity. True integrity is not simply avoiding lies — it is living with wholeness and consistency before God and people in every area of life.

Focus

The focus of this teaching is to help believers grow in living consistently before God and people — in private and in public, through our speech, in our decisions, and within our relationships.

Whether in the hidden places of our hearts or under the scrutiny of others, our words and actions should align. This is the life God blesses and the life that brings peace.

Key Scriptures

“He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known.”

Proverbs 10:9, NKJV

“Lord, who may abide in Your tabernacle? Who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly, And works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart.”

Psalm 15:1-2, NKJV

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”

Colossians 3:23, NKJV

“…providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.”

2 Corinthians 8:21, NKJV

Core Teaching

Integrity is the consistent alignment of our inner life with our outer life. It means being the same person in private that we are in public.

Integrity in Private

God sees what no one else sees. Psalm 15 emphasizes that only those who “speak the truth in his heart” can dwell in God’s presence. True integrity begins in the secret place — our thoughts, motives, and private habits.

Integrity in Public

Proverbs 10:9 promises that those who walk with integrity “walk securely.” When our public life matches our private convictions, we live without fear of exposure. There is no need to manage appearances because there is nothing hidden.

Integrity in Speech

Our words reveal the condition of our hearts. Speaking truth, avoiding exaggeration, gossip, or flattery demonstrates integrity. The person who speaks truth in their heart will naturally speak truth with their lips.

Integrity in Decisions

Colossians 3:23 calls us to do everything “heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Whether big or small, our decisions should be made with the awareness that we are ultimately accountable to God. This removes the pressure of people-pleasing and anchors us in eternal perspective.

Integrity in Relationships

2 Corinthians 8:21 challenges us to be “providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.” In relationships, integrity looks like keeping promises, being reliable, speaking truth in love, and refusing to manipulate or deceive others.

Personal Application

Walking in integrity begins with allowing God to examine every area of your life. It is easy to focus on what others see, but God also sees the hidden places of the heart — our motives, thoughts, private habits, words, and decisions.

Ask yourself honestly: Am I the same person in private that I present myself to be in public? Do my words reflect truth? Do my decisions honor God even when no one is watching? Am I dependable in my responsibilities and honest in my relationships?

Integrity does not mean you never make mistakes. It means that when God reveals something that is not right, you respond with humility, repentance, and obedience. A person of integrity does not hide from correction; they allow God to bring their life into greater alignment with His truth.

There may be areas where compromise has become comfortable. It may be in speech, private choices, unfinished commitments, financial matters, online behavior, ministry responsibilities, or the way you treat people. Bring those areas before the Lord and ask Him to help you walk uprightly.

Remember This Truth

Integrity is not about appearing perfect before people. It is about living honestly before God and allowing His truth to shape every part of your life.

Examine — Daily invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart (Psalm 139:23-24).

A Simple Pattern for Walking in Integrity

Use this simple pattern to help you live consistently before God and people in your private life, public life, speech, decisions, and relationships.

The I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y. Pattern

  1. Invite God to search your heart: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden motives, compromises, or areas that need correction.
  2. Notice inconsistencies: Pay attention to any difference between what you believe, what you say, and how you live.
  3. Tell the truth: Choose honesty in your words, actions, responsibilities, and relationships.
  4. Examine your private life: Remember that integrity begins when no one else is watching.
  5. Guard your speech: Avoid exaggeration, gossip, deception, flattery, and careless words.
  6. Remember you are serving the Lord: Make decisions with the awareness that God sees and rewards faithfulness.
  7. Initiate correction quickly: When you fall short, repent, apologize, make things right, and return to obedience.
  8. Trust God with the outcome: Choose what is right even when compromise seems easier or more beneficial.
  9. Yield daily to the Holy Spirit: Depend on God’s grace to help you walk uprightly and consistently.

Bible Reflection Questions

  1. What does Proverbs 10:9 teach you about the security that comes from walking in integrity?
  2. According to Psalm 15:1–2, why does integrity begin in the heart before it is seen in actions?
  3. Where do you feel most challenged to live consistently before God and people?
  4. Are there any areas where your private life and public life need to come into greater alignment?
  5. How do your words reflect integrity in your speech, relationships, and responsibilities?
  6. What decision or relationship currently requires you to choose honesty, wisdom, or accountability?
  7. How can Colossians 3:23 help you live faithfully even when no one else notices?

Action Step

This week, ask God to show you one area where your life needs greater consistency before Him and others. It may be in your private habits, public conduct, speech, decisions, responsibilities, or relationships.

Complete these statements:

  • One area where I need to grow in integrity is: __________________________
  • One inconsistency God is revealing to me is: __________________________
  • God’s Word says: __________________________
  • One honest step I need to take is: __________________________
  • One way I will honor God in this area is: __________________________

After completing these statements, take one practical step toward integrity. That may mean telling the truth, correcting a mistake, apologizing, keeping a commitment, creating accountability, or choosing what is right even when compromise seems easier.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me to walk uprightly before You. Search my heart and reveal any area where my private life, public life, speech, decisions, or relationships are not fully aligned with Your truth. Help me live honestly and consistently before You and others. Give me courage to choose what is right, humility to correct what is wrong, and grace to walk in integrity even when no one else is watching. Let my life honor You in both hidden and visible places. In Jesus name, Amen.
